Recent heavy rains have caused local rivers to rise to moderate flood stages. City of La Crosse staff want to caution community members and visitors of these evolving situations while encouraging everyone to obey road closures and watch for flooding on roads. Areas along the Mississippi, Black, and La Crosse Rivers can pose a significant hazard. The National Weather Service in La Crosse expects flooding to continue throughout the holiday weekend with the potential for more precipitation.
“The safety of our community members, visitors, and staff is our number one priority,” said Jeff Schott, City of La Crosse Fire Chief and Emergency Manager. “We know with the holiday weekend upon us, many citizens value opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, river, and parks during this time. Staff are working to assess and close flooded roads, boat landings and park areas. Please use caution, do not drive on closed roads, and avoid any dangerous conditions you observe.”
Follow these guidelines:
- Don’t travel on flooded roads. Hazards can be hidden under floodwater.
- Obey road closures and signs. Please don’t drive around barricades.
- Operating personnel watercraft on flooded waterways is discouraged.
- Let someone know where you plan to be and when you will return.
- Any moving water regardless of depth can be hazardous: Do not walk or drive into these areas.
