UPDATE: Investigation into Shooting on Northside

UPDATE:

On March 12, 2026, officers responded to a shooting in the 1800 block of Onalaska Avenue. Upon arrival officers located two individuals, one who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition. The other individual, a witness, was able to give information to officers to assist in the investigation, stating the suspect was inside the residence with a gun.

Officers located the suspect in the residence with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has been identified as Deontis M. Jackson (12/31/1978). The preliminary investigation reveals this incident is likely a domestic-related attempted murder-suicide.

“This is a tragic, violent situation and our thoughts are with the family and friends impacted,” said La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron. “I also want to commend staff, partnering agencies, and first responders for their response in providing life-saving measures and ensuring the scene was secure.”

This remains an active investigation.
